Description

The electricity sector is a significant sector within the Spanish economy due to its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP), investment, and employment. Furthermore, it has a multiplier effect on other sectors of the economy and is a fundamental resource for many activities or sectors, which in turn create wealth. Over the last decade, this sector, strongly consolidated in its operational structures, has undergone a true revolution. From vertically integrated monopolistic systems, it has transitioned to new paradigms, which include, among other aspects: international electricity markets, development and integration of renewable energies, smart grids, active demand management, distributed generation, etc.

In this dynamic context, the need to have a permanent supply of PhDs specialized in electrical systems, capable of keeping innovation and technological transfer alive, is unquestionable.

The PhDs trained in this program will be the main drivers of R&D&I, both in public and private centers as well as in companies. The productive sector and universities need researchers capable of advancing knowledge and developing new techniques that increase the added value of products and services that generate wealth. Likewise, researchers capable of assimilating and implementing new engineering advances carried out in other regions and countries are necessary. For this reason, the research lines offered in the PhD program are internationally leading.

To address these needs, the inter-university PhD Program brings together efforts, experience, and resources from departments and outstanding research groups of the four participating universities, as well as collaboration agreements with leading companies in the sector.

The research lines proposed in the program are structured around four main axes:

L1. Planning, modeling, and analysis of decarbonized electrical systems.
L2. Digitalization in smart electrical grids: advanced supervision, control, and protection techniques.
L3. Regulation, economic management, and business models in future electric power systems.
L4. Devices and equipment for the integration of renewable energies, energy storage, and electric mobility.
