Description

The central theme of the practice of architecture is architectural design, which must bring together construction, spatial organisation and use via the aesthetic, ethical and cognitive dimensions of the design process.

As Vitruvius pointed out two thousand years ago, that this means relating the natural sciences and the exact sciences, on the one hand, and the social sciences on the other.

This doctoral programme puts focus on one or another of these disciplines related to architecture. Though, as a set, these lines of research focus candidates’ theses on the architectural project as a design intervention that is able to connect geography and history, climate and society, and nature and culture.

The programme is organised around research groups, each of which has a particular profile based on its focus. Thus, it is not necessary for each one of them to respond to the same need for research into design; its teaching; its aesthetic, ethical or scientific nature; or its impact on modern cultural life.

Now, more than ever, given the lack of architects in the field of research in Europe, this programme is an indispensable necessity.La arquitectura tiene como eje central de su desarrollo el proyecto arquitectónico, que es el que articula la construcción, la organización espacial y el uso a partir de las dimensiones estéticas, éticas y cognitivas del proceso de diseño.

Ello conlleva, como ya indicó Vitrubio hace dos mil años, la relación entre las ciencias naturales y las exactas, de un lado, y las ciencias sociales por el otro.

Este Programa de Doctorado pone el acento en un lado u otro de este grupo de disciplinas adjuntas a la profesión de arquitecto. Pero, en conjunto, todas las líneas de investigación van a parar a tesis sobre el proyecto como intervención proyectual capaz de articular: geografía e historia, clima y sociedad, naturaleza y cultura.

La organización se articula a través de unos grupos de investigación cada uno de los cuales posee un perfil específico en función de sus intereses. Pero ello no obsta para que todos ellos respondan a una misma necesidad de investigar sobre el proyecto, su enseñanza, su naturaleza estética, ética o científica y su impacto en la vida cultural contemporánea.

Hoy más que nunca, dada la escasa presencia de los arquitectos en el espacio europeo de investigación, este programa es una necesidad ineludible.
